Sometimes nothing goes according to plan – and that’s what makes the best travel stories! Our planned weekend in Grado turned into an unforgettable adventure thanks to an unexpected strike.

Friday: Strike Chaos – The Delayed Arrival in Grado

We originally planned to leave Udine for Grado on Friday afternoon. But an unannounced transport strike in Italy ruined our plans. We only found out when we were ready to go! We used the unplanned extra night in Udine to stock up on snacks for the beach.

Tip: When traveling from Udine to Grado, always check alternative transport options. The official FVG transport website provides up-to-date information.

Saturday: Dreamy Beaches & Italian Charm

Finally arriving in Grado, we headed straight to the golden Adriatic beaches. The crystal-clear water and gentle waves were perfect for relaxing after our first exhausting internship week. In the evening, we explored the picturesque old town with its narrow alleys and enjoyed authentic Italian gelato.

Highlight: The main beach “Spiaggia Principale” offers great facilities. For quieter spots, check out Grado’s nature reserve bays.

Sunday: Bike Adventure in Valle Cavanata Nature Reserve

With rented bikes (approx. €15/day), we explored the Riserva Naturale Valle Cavanata, a protected wetland area known for its diverse birdlife. While we didn’t spot any flamingos during our visit, the scenic ride through salt marshes and along the lagoon was still rewarding. The gravel paths required some careful biking, especially when one of us briefly lost balance on the uneven terrain. We found a peaceful shady spot to enjoy our picnic while taking in the serene natural surroundings before cycling back to town.

Monday: Relaxed Return to Udine

Since our company gave us Monday off, we leisurely returned by bus. The coastal route offered more stunning views.

Conclusion:
Grado is perfect for:
✔ Beach lovers
✔ Nature enthusiasts
✔ Short trips from Udine
